All Lessons Are 90 Minutes

Here’s Why

We don’t offer 30-minute lessons. Every private lesson at Journeymen School of Music is 90 minutes. That’s a deliberate choice, not a default.

Here’s the problem with 30 minutes: you spend the first ten getting warmed up and catching up, then you’re introduced to a new concept, and then the lesson’s over before you’ve had the chance to actually *internalize* it. You leave with notes, not skill. So you go home, sit down to practice, and can’t remember exactly how it’s supposed to feel or sound.

A 90-minute lesson gives us room to do it right:

- Time to actually learn a concept, not just hear about it

- Time to practice it in the room, with real feedback, until it sticks

- Time to apply it in a jam session, a mock performance, a song you’re working on

- Time to just talk shop: gear, technique, the business side, whatever’s on your mind

It’s also not a single-topic time sink. A lot of students split their lesson across multiple things — say, part on guitar technique, part on vocals or proper mic technique for performing. You’re not drilling one concept until you’re bored; you’ve got the time to work on whatever you actually need that week.

You leave knowing how to practice the thing, not just that the thing exists.

Pricing & Scheduling

90-minute private lesson — $100, billed weekly or biweekly depending on the schedule you set with your instructor. There isn’t a separate discounted package on top of the standard rate.

Missed-lesson policy: You get one makeup lesson per month for a missed session. Beyond that, missed lessons are still billed, since that time was reserved for you. If your instructor needs to miss a lesson, they’re responsible for making it up to you.

FAQ

Why 90 minutes instead of the usual 30?

Because 30 minutes is barely enough time to learn something, let alone get comfortable with it. A 90-minute lesson gives you room to actually absorb a new concept, work through it with feedback in real time, and then put it into practice — whether that’s a jam session, a song you’re working on, or performance prep.

Is $100 per lesson, or some kind of package rate?

$100 covers one 90-minute private lesson, billed weekly or biweekly depending on the schedule you choose with your instructor.

What’s your missed-lesson policy?

You get one makeup lesson per month for a missed session. Beyond that, missed lessons are still billed, since that time was reserved for you. If your instructor needs to miss a lesson, they’re responsible for making it up to you.

Can I split a 90-minute lesson with a friend?

No — lessons are strictly one-on-one. The full 90 minutes is dedicated to you and your instructor.

I’m a true beginner — can I still sign up?

Absolutely! Our focus is intermediate players, so the pacing and lesson structure are generally built around students who already have some foundation. With that said, we’re happy to work with beginners and create a plan designed to fit the way you learn!

What instruments and genres do you teach?

We currently offer instruction for voice, guitar, mandolin, violin/fiddle and drums, with range across bluegrass, blues, jazz, rock, and pop. Whatever your starting point or direction, there’s likely a path here for you.

Where do lessons actually happen?

Lessons take place in a home-run studio space. We have multiple rooms, each set up as its own professional studio. It’s relaxed and low-key, not a corporate storefront, but the equipment in every room is the real deal.

Do you help with performing or recording, or is this just technique-based instruction?

Both. Lessons can include jam sessions, live performance prep, and conversations about the industry side of music — recording, releasing, gigging, touring — based on what our instructors actually do themselves.

What if 90 minutes feels like a lot at first?

It sounds like a lot when you’re picturing it ahead of time — once you’re actually in a lesson, it goes fast. It’s your weekly chance to learn, practice, and jam, not 90 minutes of drilling the same concept until you’re bored. You actually have room to sit with something you don’t understand yet instead of running out of time right when it starts to click.
